Tom Petty's Daughters Sue His Widow For $5 Million

59th GRAMMY Awards - MusiCares Person of the Year Honoring Tom Petty - Show

Tom Petty's daughters have escalated their legal battle with the late-rock legend's widow.

Adria Petty and Annakim Violette have been at odds with their step mother Dana York Petty over control of their father's music.

A lawsuit against Dana Petty filed by the sisters seeks at least $5 million in damages for Dana allegedly depriving Adria and Annakim of their roles in determining how Petty's work is used in the future.

Petty's will named Dana as the trustee of his trust, but terms of the trust entitle his daughters to "equal participation" in how the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's catalog is licensed and released.

Adria and Annakim (and their lawyers) believe the trust entitles them to two thirds of the vote.

In April, Dana Petty filed a probate to put the catalog in the hands of a professional manager. She argued that Adria was making it impossible to conduct business. Adria responded by filing her own probate to claim control of the estate.

The latest suit filed by Adria and Annakim alleges Dana is trying to cut the daughters out of the estate.

Dana's lawyer called the suit "misguided and meritless" and "exactly why Tom Petty designated his wife to be the sole trustee..."

Tom Petty's latest release is The Best of Everything, which came out earlier this year.

The box set featured one previously unreleased song, "For Real," for which Adria directed the music video.
