Brad Arnold, founding member and longtime frontman of 3 Doors Down, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 47.

The band confirmed Arnold’s death in a message shared on Instagram, saying he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 7, surrounded by his wife, Jennifer, and close loved ones. In their statement, the group credited Arnold with shaping their sound and helping bring emotionally driven, accessible rock music to a broad audience.

Arnold publicly revealed in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer, specifically clear cell renal cell carcinoma that had spread to his lungs. At the time, 3 Doors Down canceled its summer tour as Arnold began treatment. In a video message to fans, the singer said he was not afraid and leaned heavily on his faith, asking supporters for prayers while referencing the band’s hit “It’s Not My Time.”

Born and raised in Escatawpa, Mississippi, Arnold formed 3 Doors Down in 1996 with high school friends Matt Roberts and Todd Harrell. Initially serving as both lead singer and drummer, Arnold wrote “Kryptonite” while still in high school. The song’s success on local radio eventually led to a major-label deal and launched the band into mainstream success.

During the early 2000s, 3 Doors Down became one of rock radio’s most consistent hitmakers, earning multiple Billboard Hot 100 entries, including top-five singles “Kryptonite,” “When I’m Gone,” and “Here Without You.” The band also topped the Billboard 200 with albums Seventeen Days and 3 Doors Down, and Arnold received three Grammy nominations for his songwriting and performances.

Beyond chart success, Arnold was remembered by his bandmates as a devoted husband and a generous, kindhearted presence whose faith and humility left a lasting impression on those around him. Tributes quickly poured in from across the rock community, with fellow bands and industry leaders praising his talent, friendship, and ability to connect with listeners.

Arnold is the second original member of 3 Doors Down to pass away, following guitarist Matt Roberts, who died in 2016. The band said Arnold’s legacy will live on through his music and the lives he touched.
