After more than 18 months of searching, the Harrisonburg Police Department has selected Joe Tucker as its new chief of police.
Tucker, who previously served as crisis negotiation commander with the Lynchburg Police Department, will officially begin his new role on February 2. During his time in Lynchburg, he earned several honors, including Police Officer of the Year in 2020, Veteran of Foreign Affairs Officer of the Year in 2024, and the department’s Meritorious Service Medal.

At a press conference Wednesday, Tucker shared his priorities for his early months in Harrisonburg, emphasizing the importance of listening, learning, and building trust within the community. He said he plans to focus on strengthening professional development within the department and expanding long-term community partnerships.
Tucker also highlighted his commitment to meaningful engagement with residents, saying he wants to foster open conversations and mutual accountability to help improve public safety and quality of life in the city.
Local media outlets are expected to conduct an in-depth interview with Tucker next week after he officially takes office.
