Dave Mustaine believes there’s one clear way to mend fences with his former Metallica bandmates: a joint tour.

In a recent interview with Revolver, Mustaine reflected on his early years in Metallica ahead of the release of Megadeth’s upcoming self-titled album, which he has described as the band’s final release. Looking back, Mustaine spoke warmly about the group, praising James Hetfield’s guitar work and calling Lars Ulrich “a tremendous songwriter.”

Mustaine said revisiting Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” on Megadeth’s final album felt symbolic. “It’s my way of closing the circle,” he explained, adding that while he holds no lingering resentment, reopening a personal relationship could be complicated by unresolved history.

“If the friendship was restarted, it wouldn’t bother me. I would accept it,” Mustaine said. “But because there was a lot of hurt and misunderstanding, it would be difficult not to keep bringing up the past.”

For Mustaine, the solution is simple. “I think what needs to happen is a Megadeth and Metallica tour. Period,” he said. “That would make everything right.”

Despite decades of shared history, the two bands have rarely shared the stage. They last performed together during the Big Four concerts in 2010 and 2011 alongside Slayer and Anthrax, with only one additional joint show taking place in 1993. A full co-headlining tour has never happened.

Megadeth’s final album arrives Friday (Jan. 23), with the first leg of the band’s farewell tour launching Feb. 15 in Victoria, British Columbia.
