Harrisonburg School Board Names New Chair and Vice Chair

The Harrisonburg City School Board began the new year by selecting new leadership during its first meeting of 2026 on Tuesday night (January 6).

Board members voted to appoint Tim Howley as chair and Matt Snyder as vice chair for the year ahead. Howley steps into the role after serving as vice chair in 2025, while Snyder takes on the second-in-command position.

Howley acknowledged that the district faced significant challenges over the past year and said he plans to lead with a collaborative and measured approach. He emphasized balancing careful decision-making with the ability to act swiftly when circumstances require it.

“Our focus is on working as a team,” Howley said, noting that cooperation and thoughtful planning will guide the board’s work moving forward.

Looking ahead, Howley said one of his priorities for 2026 is ensuring that students and staff across all Harrisonburg City Public Schools feel supported, safe, and included in their learning and working environments.
