As the Fourth of July weekend nears, Harrisonburg city officials are reminding everyone that fireworks are strictly prohibited within city limits to protect public safety.
Harrisonburg Fire Chief Matthew Tobia emphasized that no type of fireworks — including sparklers — are allowed in the city. “Anything that shoots into the air, explodes, or burns is illegal here in Harrisonburg,” Tobia said. This ban is in place to prevent injuries and fires during the holiday season.
To enforce these rules, the Harrisonburg Fire Department will have extra fire marshals patrolling the city, ensuring residents celebrate responsibly and within the law.
Chief Tobia also urged the community to take extra safety steps beyond avoiding fireworks. He recommended staying hydrated, checking on neighbors, especially elderly residents vulnerable to heat, and protecting children from sun exposure. He also reminded drivers to stay alert for children playing outside during the holiday.
HFD has seen serious injuries in Harrisonburg caused by illegal fireworks, including people losing fingers, eyes, or other body parts. “Fireworks are not toys; they are explosives that can cause severe harm,” Tobia said. He pointed out that sparklers alone burn at around 800 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to cause instant burns or start fires.
For those wanting to enjoy fireworks safely and legally, the city encourages families to attend the public fireworks show in Downtown Harrisonburg on July 5.
