Madeline McKee, a 14-year-old from Goodview, Virginia, has loved Metallica for years, thanks to her dad regularly playing their music.
So when her family scored tickets to see Metallica live at Lane Stadium earlier this month, it felt like a dream coming true—until disaster struck just hours before the show.
At around 2 a.m. on the day of the concert, a driver crashed into the McKee family’s home, plowing straight through the living room. “We had just decided to go to bed early,” said Madeline’s mom, Kristin McKee. “A few hours later, we woke up to a loud boom and shattered glass—it was complete chaos.”
Normally, Kristin and her husband would have been up watching TV at that time, but their decision to rest early in anticipation of the concert may have saved their lives. “I truly believe Metallica saved us that night,” Kristin said. “It’s because of them we weren’t in that room.”
After the shock wore off, Madeline sat down and wrote a heartfelt letter to the band. “You saved my parents’ lives,” she wrote. “I will be forever grateful. Good luck with the rest of your tour and hope to see you on the road. Sincerely, Maddie McKee.”
Now, as they work through the aftermath of the crash, the McKee family hopes to be back in their Goodview home within six months.
