Starting May 7, travelers will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights in the U.S. If you don’t have one, you’ll need another federally approved form of identification, such as a passport.
Since REAL IDs became available in October 2018, the Virginia DMV has issued them to more than 4.1 million residents. Due to strong demand, the DMV has expanded services, including offering extended Saturday hours and special REAL ID appointments, to help Virginians get ready before the deadline.
“A lot of people are applying for REAL IDs, so we’ve added more opportunities for folks to get theirs,” said Camila Barco, a spokesperson for the Virginia DMV.
In addition to air travel, a REAL ID will be necessary to enter certain federal buildings and military bases.
The DMV recommends starting the application process online, where you can see exactly which documents you’ll need to bring to your appointment.
