On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, generosity will take center stage as 147 nonprofits from Harrisonburg and Rockingham County come together for the eighth annual Great Community Give. This highly anticipated online giving day, hosted by The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham (TCFHR), has become a cornerstone of local philanthropy, having raised an impressive $9.2 million since its inception.
Event organizers are hopeful that this year’s efforts will break new records. With donations historically peaking early in the day, they predict surpassing the $10 million milestone by the morning hours. Running from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., the event offers a concentrated window for giving, though contributions are welcome from April 2-15 via direct cash or check donations to participating nonprofits.
“Last year, more than 7,600 donors helped us raise $2.2 million, and we’re aiming even higher this year,” shared Lauren Jefferson, TCFHR’s director of programs and marketing. “It’s especially exciting to see new donors join us; over the past two years, about 2,200 participants were first-time givers. We’d love to see that number grow.”
For donors, the process is simple and efficient. By visiting greatcommunitygive.org, supporters can browse through causes, select organizations, and add donations to a virtual cart. Supporting multiple nonprofits has never been easier.
Jefferson emphasized the critical role this event plays in uplifting the community. “Our local nonprofits provide invaluable services to residents, and their work deserves recognition and support. This is a unique day to celebrate their efforts and make our community stronger and healthier.”
The success of the Great Community Give is bolstered by the generosity of 43 sponsors, who contribute to a prize pool exceeding $76,000. These funds are distributed to nonprofits through hourly contests and random drawings, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
The impact of last year’s donations highlights the event’s importance. Among the many success stories:
- Explore More Museum enhanced its creative studio workshop, expanded teen internship and preschool programs, and hosted Career Saturdays featuring local professionals.
- Village to Village held a free week-long camp for over 60 refugee students, fostering connections with the help of 50 community volunteers.
- Silk Moth Stage, a leader in accessibility in Virginia’s theater scene, used funds to provide American Sign Language interpretation at performances, inspiring other theaters to adopt similar practices.
- Still Meadows Enrichment Center and Camp maintained railings on its accessible treehouse, purchased camp supplies, and expanded therapeutic riding programs with new equipment.
This year, TCFHR encourages donors to spread the word and engage friends, family, and colleagues in the celebration. The Great Community Give is more than a fundraising event—it’s a testament to the strength, kindness, and generosity of the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County community.
