The penultimate episode of the first season of One Tree Hill sparks a lot of conversation for its stars, Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton Morgan, and Bethany Joy Lenz on their rewatch podcast Drama Queens. From the awkwardness of shooting emotional scenes in a public place (“it’s like, ‘I’d love to talk but I have to pretend a baby was just kidnapped’”) to Joy’s fight with the writers over the pornography storyline, they get into it all. “I just love talking to you girls about any and everything,” Joy tells her co-hosts, and no wonder: Their camaraderie, combined with their willingness to tackle hard topics brought up by the plot points of the show, the hardships of actually shooting it, and their thoughtful responses to acting, editing, and camera choices make this one of the best rewatch podcasts out there.
One of the best things about it is when they start sharing personal stories from their own high school years. Sophia’s and Hilarie’s characters are best friends who were both dating the same guy for a while, causing strife in their friendship. In this episode, though, they’re back to besties again, and the Queens love to see it. Hilarie recalls a hilarious story about finding out that a guy at her arts summer camp was seeing another girl behind her back; they both teamed up to fake a discovery scene in the cafeteria, then enlisted all the other kids to create performances of the event for the end-of-year talent show. “She and I sang a rendition of ‘Cell Block Tango’ with his real name!” Hilarie laughs. “That’s too good!” Sophia and Joy crow.
Joy also had to resort to some petty moves when she dated a guy who refused to remove the giant posters of naked women he had hung all over his house, including his kitchen. He said they were artwork, but they were more like blown-up Maxim spreads. So Joy bought a giant poster of a hot guy standing in the surf, sporting a visibly large package under some tiny briefs. She hung it up over her toilet so whenever he came over, he had to stare up at it. “It worked eventually!” she laughs. Hear all this endearing girl talk and lots of great behind-the-scenes memories of One Tree Hill on this episode of Drama Queens.
