The Foo Fighters are back—and they kicked things off with a surprise, intimate gig in California.

On Friday, Sept. 12, the band announced on Instagram that they’ll perform at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo the very next night (Saturday, Sept. 13). The all-ages show, set in a 900-capacity venue, marked their first live performance with new drummer Ilan Rubin, who officially joined the group earlier this summer after stints with Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves.

The Foos hyped the show with the caption: “SOUND ON. See you Saturday in San Luis Obispo,” alongside a poster teasing the event. Fans also got a taste of a new riff-heavy track embedded in the clip. One user commented: “Yeeees this is the sound we like … good heavy riffs! The boys are back to what they’re good at and it feels good!!”

Some listeners speculated that the track could connect to past live jams. “They played this in-between All My Life in Birmingham a couple years ago,” one fan wrote. Others wondered if it was tied to the band’s 30th anniversary, suggesting they might be reworking old songs or gearing up for a bigger release.

Leading up to the show, the Foos also dropped a pair of cryptic teasers: one nodding to Weird Al Yankovic’s “My Bologna,” recorded at Cal Poly in 1979, and another showing Dave Grohl rocking a T-shirt from Boo Boo Records, a beloved San Luis Obispo record store.

The Fremont Theater concert is the band’s first since September 2024. From there, they’ll launch into an international run, with stops in Indonesia (Oct. 2), Singapore (Oct. 4), Japan (Oct. 7, 8, 10), and Mexico City (Nov. 14).

This marks the start of a new chapter for the Foo Fighters. In July, they confirmed Rubin as their new permanent drummer following the departure of Josh Freese, who stepped in after the passing of longtime member Taylor Hawkins in 2022.
