Mom Says This Saves You Hundreds Of Dollars On Food

Tired of throwing out food that didn’t get eaten in time? Most of us have reached in the back of the fridge for something, only to find it got moved or neglected and has now gone bad. It’s frustrating, not to mention expensive, but registered dietitian and mom of two Alyssa Miller has come up with what she considers a fool-proof way to cut down on food waste.

She reorganized her fridge and set up a “need to use” bin that she fills with food that needs to be eaten before it goes bad. “I needed to figure out a way to make sure I was using all the food I was buying,” Alyssa explains. “It’s more for those foods that need to be eaten in the next day or two because they’re kind of like on the clock.”

So every week, she does a sweep of everything in her fridge and finds anything close to expiring, whether it’s a cucumber or yogurt, and adds it to the “need to use” bin. Other tips Alyssa swears by are taking a fridge inventory every week and dividing foods up by category, then using clear bins to sort and access food so it’s less likely to go bad in the way back. These hacks are not only simple, she estimates they help her save up to $400 a month on groceries.
