Surviving Members Of The Doors Prepare Set With Nirvana's Krist Novoselic

Music Biz 2016 - Day 1

The Doors drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger will play a short, semi-acoustic set at a charity event in Los Angeles next Thursday, January 23, to benefit the homeless.

Densmore and Krieger will be joined by Nirvana's Krist Novoselic on bass (and potentially accordion), while vocals will reportedly be handled by a rotating cast of singers.

The highly-anticipated set to benefit Homeward Bound will take place at the Wiltern in L.A. Densmore admitted to Rolling Stone that they don't yet have a setlist, but he says that's no different than how The Doors always did it.

"I'm used to it!" Densmore said. "I was the one who did the setlists in the Doors, because nobody would, and just before going on stage, I'd sit down and go, 'OK, guys, c'mon! What are we opening with?'"

He says the band would rarely plan beyond its first "three or four song" and "wing it" from there.

"Corralling musicians is like corralling cats," he noted.

Densmore says he and Krieger have gone years without jamming before and picked up right where they left off. He says The Doors' music is "in [our] blood. In two bars we were back. It's just part of you."

Thursday's bill also includes Jason Mraz, Fitz & the Tantrums, Ingrid Michaelson and Maddie Poppe.

While Krieger has toured for many years on the Doors' catalog, Densmore has been a caretaker of the band's legacy within world of film and literature in addition to the occasional gig. The drummer has written extensively about his experiences with rock stardom and readily confronts Jim Morrison's problematic legend.

Krieger and Densmore last collaborated at the 2017 Founders Award Celebration at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. Novoselic connected with the pair at that event, playing accordion on a rendition of "Light My Fire."

Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell also joined in on that set, singing "Love Her Madly" with the all-star band.
