Cancer remains a leading health challenge in Virginia. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2025 Cancer Facts & Figures, Virginia is projected to see approximately 37,200 new cancer cases and 14,920 cancer-related deaths in 2025. The most common cancers in the state include breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers, with lung cancer continuing to be the leading cause of cancer death.
Nationally, cancer accounts for one in every five deaths, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. These numbers underscore the importance of community-driven efforts like Relay For Life to fund lifesaving research and provide critical patient support.
Relay For Life is the largest community-based fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, uniting millions worldwide to fight cancer. Since its inception in 1985, Relay For Life has raised over $6.9 billion to fund groundbreaking research, advocacy, and patient services. In Virginia, Relay events have supported initiatives such as free rides to treatment, lodging near hospitals, and cancer screenings for underserved communities.
